Wire Coat Care

Wire coat: why it is not a "hairstyle" but a protective system?

A wire coat is not a beauty solution and not a "style."

It is a protective system created by nature so that a dog could live in challenging conditions.

This coat type protects against:

  • rain and mud,
  • cold and wind,
  • sun,
  • mechanical damage (bushes, branches, friction).

Therefore, the main goal is function, not softness or visual "beauty."

How does a wire coat "work"?

The structure of a wire coat is always two-layered:

1️⃣ Hard, coarse top coat

This is the "armor":

repels water,

protects the skin,

maintains shape and color,

protects from friction.

2️⃣ Softer undercoat

maintains warmth,

ensures a stable microclimate close to the body.

👉 Only when both layers are balanced does the coat truly perform its function.

Why does a wire coat not "fall out" on its own?

The most important biological feature of this coat type:

a mature (old) hair often does not shed naturally.

At the same time, a new hair already begins growing from the same follicle.

This means that in one spot at the same time there may be:

  • an old (mature) hair,
  • an active hair,
  • a newly growing hair.

If the old hair is not removed in time, it begins to interfere:

  • takes up space,
  • presses on the skin,
  • prevents new hair from growing normally,
  • disrupts skin "breathing."

Then the body chooses the easiest path:

instead of producing hard protective hair, it begins producing more soft undercoat.

Result:

  • the coat softens,
  • loses color,
  • becomes "fluffy,"
  • loses structure.

This is not genetics and not a "bad coat."

It is the result of incorrect care.

Why should a wire coat not be clipped with a machine?

A wire coat should not be clipped with a machine because:

  • the hair is only cut,
  • but remains in the follicle with the root,
  • the body "thinks" the hair is still there,
  • therefore it does not receive a signal to grow new hard hair.

Over time:

  • the coat becomes soft and wavy,
  • fragile,
  • loses pigment,
  • begins to shed,
  • may not regrow with the same structure as before.

👉 This is not only aesthetics – it is a disruption of coat biology.

The correct solution: hand stripping

The only correct foundation of wire coat care is:

✅ manual removal of mature hair with the root (hand stripping).

When the old hair is removed with the root:

  • the follicle is released,
  • the body receives a clear signal:
  • "the hair is gone – a new one must grow,"
  • a new, strong, hard, correctly structured hair grows.

What is "rolling coat" and why is it not a one-time procedure?

"Rolling coat" is often misunderstood.

It is not a procedure performed once.

It is a continuous, cyclical maintenance process.

"Rolling coat" means:

  • the coat is never left to fully overgrow,
  • and never completely stripped down at once,
  • mature hair is removed regularly, gradually,
  • at the time when new hair is already growing beside it.

You can imagine the cycle:

hair grows → matures → performs its function → is removed → new hair grows in its place.

When "rolling coat" is maintained correctly:

  • the dog is never left without protective coat,
  • the coat remains dense, hard, and structurally stable,
  • there are no "shocks" or extremes.

Frequency:

  • Pet dogs: usually every 6–10 weeks.
  • Show dogs: more often, every 1–2 weeks.

The principle does not change – only the rhythm intensity differs.

Bathing: moderate and purposeful

Wire coat bathing must be moderate, because excessive or incorrect bathing:

  • softens the hair,
  • increases oiliness,
  • disrupts natural renewal.

General guidelines:

  • pet dogs: every 4–6 weeks or according to real need,
  • show dogs: before shows or when necessary to maintain cleanliness and structure.

Most important:

use light shampoos that do not seal the structure.

❌ Softeners, conditioners and oils are usually not suitable

(except for very specific, localized cases).

Brushing and daily care

A wire coat does not need constant "polishing."

It is enough:

  • 1–2 times per week, so the skin can breathe and mats do not accumulate.

Special attention to high-friction areas:

  • armpits,
  • neck,
  • chest,
  • "skirt" and legs (if longer).

Especially for small dogs that are often carried – friction quickly damages hair.

Differences between pet and show wire coats

For pet dogs, the most important:

  • comfort,
  • healthy skin,
  • functional coat.

For show dogs, additionally important:

  • texture,
  • color depth,
  • silhouette and structural stability.

This requires more discipline and continuous rolling coat maintenance.

📌 Essential logic for wire coat

✔ Do not soften – protect structure

✔ Do not "polish" – maintain function

✔ Do not change biology – work with it

The goal of wire coat care is not to make it soft.

The goal is to keep it hard, functional and alive.
