Long Coat Brushing

Brushing a long coat: how, when and with what?

One of the most common questions I hear when working with long-haired dogs:

How often should you brush a dog?

The answer is never the same for everyone.

It depends on:

  • the dog’s lifestyle,
  • bathing frequency,
  • coat condition,
  • the quality of cosmetics used.

Brushing is not a mechanical action.

It is part of the coat care system.

How often to brush?

🏆 Show dog

Bathed: once per week

Brushing need: usually not required between baths

Why?

  • The coat is constantly hydrated and nourished
  • The hair surface is closed
  • It is elastic and stable

If the dog:

  • did not roll around,
  • did not tangle mechanically,
  • did not experience intense friction,

additional brushing is not necessary.

Bathed: once per month or less

Brushing need: necessary between baths

However, the most important thing is not "whether to brush," but how to brush.

Main rule: never brush dry coat

This is one of the most important rules.

Dry hair:

  • breaks,
  • splits,
  • creates micro-cracks,
  • begins to accumulate dust,
  • tangles even more.

Later it is said:

"That’s just the coat," "nothing can be done."

Most often this is the result of incorrect brushing.

How to brush correctly?

🔹 1 step – Moisten

Before taking a comb or brush, always use:

  • a spray conditioner,
  • a detangler.

This provides:

✔ slip

✔ moisture

✔ protection

✔ reduced friction

🔹 2 step – Gentle separation

Brush without rushing

  • Follow the direction of hair growth
  • Work in sections (layers)
  • Hold the hair near the root so as not to pull the skin

Brushing must not be:

❌ pulling

❌ breaking

❌ tearing

It must be a calm process.

🔹 3 step – Control pass with a comb

After the brush, use a comb with different tooth densities:

  • wider spacing – for separation
  • denser spacing – for control

If the comb glides without catching – the coat is brushed correctly.

Correct vs. Avoid

✅ Correct                              ❌ Avoid

Always use a detangler           Brushing dry coat

Brush gently, without rushing  Breaking and pulling

Work in layers                         "Surface brushing only"

Choose appropriate tools        Using overly sharp, rigid tools

See care as a system              Treat brushing as a separate action

Essential logic

Brushing is not a fight with the coat.

It is a continuation of care:

hydration → nourishment → protection → gentle brushing

If the coat is nourished and hydrated, it separates on its own.

If it is dry – we break it.
