Double Coat Care
Double coat: why should it not be "simplified"?
A double coat is not accidental.
It is not "excess hair" that can be shortened or removed simply because it seems more convenient or visually pleasing to a human.
It is a vital system created by nature so that a dog can:
- adapt to climate,
- regulate body temperature,
- move in various conditions,
- be protected from environmental impact.
This system existed even before breeds – it came from wolves.
Humans changed the exterior, but the biological essence remained the same.
How does a double coat work?
A double coat consists of two layers:
1️⃣ Protective top coat
2️⃣ Undercoat
They do not exist separately – only together.
If one layer is destroyed or ignored, the entire system stops functioning as it should.
Top coat
- Protects against sun, rain and wind
- Repels moisture
- Protects from friction
- Keeps the undercoat in proper structure
Undercoat
The undercoat is not "warmth."
It is the holder of the air layer.
It is the air between the hairs that allows the body to regulate temperature.
👉 A double coat does not directly warm or cool.
It regulates.
Why must a double coat shed?
A double coat is alive and constantly changing.
The undercoat must:
- fall out when it is no longer needed,
- regrow when it is needed.
This is a normal biological process.
However, shedding occurs only when the body has sufficient resources.
If there is a lack of:
- proteins,
- fatty acids,
- minerals,
- trace elements,
the undercoat does not have the "strength" to fall out.
What happens when shedding is disrupted?
The undercoat remains in the skin, accumulates and mats.
Then:
- the skin overheats,
- moisture accumulates,
- odor appears,
- itching begins,
- inflammation develops.
This is not a "bad coat."
It is a signal that the system is no longer fully functioning.
Why is shaving a double coat a mistake?
Short shaving does not solve the problem.
It only disrupts the system.
When the protective top coat is removed:
- the undercoat is left without protection,
- moisture and heat accumulate,
- the coat takes a long time to dry,
- the skin becomes vulnerable.
Another problem – the top coat often does not regrow as it was before.
It may become:
- soft,
- weak,
- pigment-loss prone,
- without structure.
The dog loses the natural protection it had since birth.
Not all double coats are the same
Wolf-type breeds
- Samoyeds
- Huskies
- Alaskan Malamutes
Their coat system is very stable.
The human task – help remove dead undercoat during shedding.
Decorative double-coated breeds
- Pomeranians
- Spitz breeds
Their undercoat is:
- denser,
- finer,
- often does not fall out on its own.
These dogs require:
✔ regular bathing
✔ professional drying
✔ undercoat control
✔ balanced nutrition
Not shaving.
What does correct double coat care look like?
The main rule is simple:
👉 We do not have the right to simplify what nature created as complex.
A double coat must be:
- clean down to the skin,
- free of excess undercoat,
- light and breathable,
- not overloaded with inappropriate cosmetics.
Only then does it perform its function.
Chain reaction: when the system is damaged
When a person begins shortening or dismantling natural structure, damage rarely stops at aesthetics.
Over time, there may appear:
- heavy shedding,
- non-regrowing areas,
- alopecia,
- bald zones,
- sensitive or inflamed skin.
This is especially visible in decorative breeds such as Pomeranians.
It must be clearly stated:
It is impossible to change a breed’s coat type.
You can change appearance.
You cannot change biology.
Is it possible to restore a damaged coat?
Yes – in most cases, it is possible.
If:
- you stop in time,
- you stop disrupting the system,
- you begin working consistently,
- you understand coat biology.
Restoration is not a fast process.
It is a path requiring time, discipline and correct decisions.
But it is real.
Main message for the owner
A dog’s comfort does not depend on how short its coat is.
Comfort depends on whether its care system functions properly.
When we begin to see the coat not as a beauty detail but as a living part of the organism, decisions change.
And they protect not only appearance, but the dog itself.
