Short Coat Care

Short coat: why is “it doesn’t need anything” a dangerous myth?

A short coat is very often considered the easiest to maintain.

One of the most common sentences heard:

“He’s short-haired, he doesn’t need anything.”

Practice shows the opposite.

Short-haired dogs often have the most persistent skin and coat problems.

Constant shedding – not normal

Many short-haired dogs:

  • shed all year round,
  • leave fine hair on clothes, furniture, and carpets,
  • look as if they are always shedding.

This is not a normal process. It is a sign that the coat cycle is disrupted.

How should shedding occur?

Physiologically, a dog should shed periodically – usually 1–2 times per year.

This requires:

  • strong, nourished follicles,
  • healthy breathable skin,
  • balanced supply of nutrients.

If follicles do not have enough resources:

  • they cannot release the old coat all at once,
  • cannot grow a strong new hair.

Then the hair falls out gradually – all year long.

This is not just that type of coat. It is an imbalanced system.

Short coat and skin specifics

Short-haired dogs most often have:

  • thicker skin,
  • more active sebaceous glands,
  • a higher tendency to become oily.

If such skin is not regularly cleaned and nourished:

  • pores become clogged,
  • skin breathing is disrupted,
  • follicles begin to starve.

Most common short-coat problems

Poorly maintained short-haired dogs often:

  • shed constantly,
  • have a greasy heavy coat,
  • emit an unpleasant odor,
  • are prone to irritation,
  • have dandruff or redness.

This is not a breed characteristic. It is the result of improper care.

Can a short-haired dog shed very little?

Yes.

If the skin is regularly cleaned, follicles are nourished, pores are open, and skin balance is maintained, the coat cycle normalizes.

Hair falls out when it is supposed to – not constantly.

Short-haired dogs do not need less care. They need consistency and discipline.

The essence of short coat care

The short coat system is based on three principles:

1️⃣ Regular skin cleansing

2️⃣ Skin and follicle nourishment

3️⃣ Removal of dead coat

It is not complicated, but it must be done consistently.

Work during shedding: 3-step system

During shedding, the goal is not to wash out hair. The goal is to restore skin balance and help the body release the old coat at once.

🔹 Step 1 – Skin preparation and deep cleansing

Only clean skin can breathe.

This stage:

  • opens pores,
  • removes excess oil,
  • cleanses dead cells.

Without this stage, follicles cannot function properly.

🔹 Step 2 – Skin and follicle nourishment

This is the most important stage.

Products nourish the skin, provide follicles with necessary substances, stimulate circulation, and help release dead coat.

The product is left on for no less than 5 minutes.

During this time, follicles receive nutrients, wake up, and dead hair loosens.

Brushing during the procedure

Begin very gently brushing with a rake, without pressure and without aggression.

Dead coat is removed without trauma, hair is not pulled out, and the follicle is not damaged.

Brush until almost no shedding hair remains.

This allows the body to:

✔ release the old coat at once

✔ begin growing a new one

🔹 Step 3 – Conditioning and stabilization

This stage is critically important.

Its goal is to soothe the skin, stabilize pH, close the protective barrier, and protect from irritation.

After the procedure, the skin should remain:

✔ calm

✔ hydrated

✔ protected

Important to understand

A short coat is not the easiest to maintain. Problems become visible immediately.

If skin and coat are properly maintained:

✔ shedding becomes seasonal

✔ odor disappears

✔ skin remains calm

✔ the coat becomes shiny and stable

Then the short coat becomes one of the cleanest and easiest to maintain.
