Long Coat Care

Long (flowing) coat: beauty that begins with the skin

The long flowing coat is often considered the most beautiful – and at the same time the most complex.

However, the most important thing to understand is this:

problems arise not because of length, but because of imbalance.

Long hair itself is not the problem. The problem appears when the system is not functioning.

Most common long-coat problems

Owners of long-haired dogs most commonly face:

  • matting,
  • dryness,
  • breakage,
  • a "dirty look" even after bathing,
  • ear zone or armpit issues.

In almost all cases, the cause is:

✔ insufficiently nourished skin

✔ weak follicles

✔ incorrect care system

A long coat must fall, flow, and move.

If it does not – it is a signal that the system is not working.

Long coat structure: everything begins at the root

The strength of long hair is determined not by its length, but by its root.

Hair grows from the follicle.

The follicle lives in the skin.

If the skin lacks:

  • sufficient moisture,
  • lipids,
  • a strong protective barrier,

the hair grows weak from the very beginning.

Such hair:

  • dries out faster,
  • splits,
  • becomes static,
  • attracts dust,
  • begins to tangle.

Two main directions in long-coat care

Long coat care must always have two directions:

1️⃣ Skin and follicle nourishment

2️⃣ Hair hydration and protection

Only the balance of these two directions allows the coat to "live on its own."

If only the hair is treated but not the skin – the problem will repeat.

If only the skin is treated but the hair surface is not protected – the result will not be stable.

Why does a long coat tangle?

Matting is not the fault of long hair.

It begins when the hair is:

  • dry,
  • damaged,
  • with an open, rough cuticle.

Cracks in the hair surface act like hooks – they catch:

  • dust,
  • dirt,
  • other hairs.

This is how mats form.

When the hair is:

✔ nourished

✔ elastic

✔ with a "closed" cuticle

impurities do not cling to it, and the coat remains clean and smooth.

Bathing – not washing, but a procedure

Bathing a long coat is not only about cleanliness.

It is a nourishment and protection procedure.

A properly performed procedure:

  • nourishes the skin,
  • hydrates the hair,
  • closes the cuticle,
  • "locks" nutrients inside the hair,
  • provides elasticity and lightness of fall.

👉 This is the moment when the foundation for the coming weeks is created.

Bathing frequency

  • Show long-haired dogs are usually bathed once per week.
  • For pet dogs, a quality procedure every 3–4 weeks or according to real need is sufficient.

Bathing too rarely allows oils and dirt to accumulate.

Bathing too often – if incorrect products are used – dries out the skin.

What matters is not frequency, but quality.

Drying – a critical stage

A long coat must be:

  • completely dried,
  • directionally dried,
  • gently straightened with airflow.

Improper drying:

  • leaves moisture near the skin,
  • encourages bacterial growth,
  • weakens hair structure,
  • forms mats.

Drying is not just "blowing."

It is a structure-forming stage.

Brushing – only when necessary

A properly nourished long coat does not require daily struggle.

Brushing is necessary:

  • when the coat is damp after a walk,
  • before procedures,
  • to maintain shape,
  • in problem areas (armpits, behind ears, groin).

A healthy coat maintains its fall on its own.

Constant intensive brushing is often a sign of a problem, not a solution.

Most common mistakes in long-coat care

❌ Overly aggressive brushing of dry coat

❌ Incorrect cosmetics (too strong or too heavy)

❌ Incomplete drying

❌ Incorrect top knot bands

❌ Ignoring nutrition

A long coat requires not force, but a system.

Differences between pet and show long coats

For pet dogs, the most important things are:

  • comfort,
  • healthy skin,
  • non-matting, elastic coat.

For show dogs, additionally important:

  • fall line,
  • shine,
  • hair weight,
  • movement in the ring.

However, the foundation in both cases is the same:

strong follicles and nourished skin.

Main message

A long flowing coat should not be a constant problem.

When:

  • the skin is nourished,
  • follicles are strong,
  • the hair is hydrated and protected,
  • the cuticle is "closed,"

care becomes easy.

Beauty then is no longer the result of effort.

It becomes a natural state.

When the system works – it falls, moves, and stays clean naturally.
